Requirements for statutory health insurance for students
Students have a number of options to choose from when it comes to statutory health insurance:

- Student health insurance
- Voluntary health insurance for students
Family insurance, student health insurance or voluntary health insurance?
When you are looking into statutory health insurance for students, choosing the right insurance status for you will depend on a few different factors:

How old are you?
Which study semester are you currently in?
Do you have health insurance cover under a family insurance policy taken out by your parents or spouse in Germany or in a country with which a social security agreement is in place?
Requirements for family insurance
You need to be under the age of 25.
If your parents or spouse have a health insurance policy in Germany or in a country with a regulated social security agreement, you have the option of cover under a family health insurance arrangement.
Requirements for student health insurance
This is possible up to the age of 30.
This is an option up to the end of your 14th study semester.
Requirements for voluntary health insurance
This is possible once you are above the age of 30.
This is an option from your 15th study semester onwards.
